Could NJ Transit Be Doing a Better Job of Keeping People Safe?

Three teenagers lost their lives in New Jersey train accidents in a two day period at the beginning of October 2011. Three families, and countless friends, are left grieving the tragic loss of young lives. New Jersey Transit is asking that very question and New Jersey Transportation Commissioner is convening a task force to hold safety summits. The task force is charged with determining whether safety could be improved at 340 New Jersey railroad crossings and how to educate children about the dangers presented by moving trains.

Prior to the October 2011 New Jersey train deaths, officials had already identified 33 stations that need better safety features such as fencing or lighting.
