EMPLOYMENT IN THE U.S.

The U.S. lost 54,000 jobs in August, and the unemployment rate rose to 9.6%. The good news is that private employers added 67,000 jobs, more than forecast, but government layoffs more than offset that gain, the Labor Department reported.
