How to Prevent Heat-Related Construction Illnesses

Heat-related illnesses are a real risk for construction workers, especially during the heat waves of midsummer.  Construction employers can minimize the dangers of heat-related illnesses by:

  • Providing workers with a cool place to take breaks. This may include an air-conditioned trailer or a shaded area, for example.
  • Adjusting work schedules to avoid the hottest part of the day. Construction workers may work at night or in the very early morning hours to avoid the hot midday sun.
  • Keeping workers well hydrated. Workers should be provided with unlimited access to cool, fresh water.
  • Having workers wear proper clothing. Clothing should be as light-weight as possible, taking into consideration the necessary safety precautions that must be taken on construction sites.
  • Recognizing the early signs of heat illness and getting the required help.

If you are a construction worker who has suffered from heat stroke or another heat related illness, then you may be entitled to damages.
