How to Recognize Symptoms of PTSD After a Construction Accident

Injured construction workers who recognize the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and get prompt treatment may be at lower risk for substance abuse, depression and anxiety.*  However, in order to get treatment, you must first recognize the signs or symptoms of PTSD.

Some of the common symptoms of PTSD include:
  • Reliving the event:  either through vivid flashbacks, frequent memories, dreams, or physical reactions to situations that remind you of your construction accident.
  • Avoidance: which may include staying away from people, places, events, or even memories that remind you of your traumatic accident.  Feelings of detachment or avoidance of normal activities can also be a symptom of PTSD.
  • Arousal: this may include uncontrollable anger, problems sleeping, problems concentrating or hyperawareness of certain things.

If you experience any of these symptoms, then you should consult a doctor as soon as possible for a diagnosis and, if appropriate, treatment.  PTSD is a very real and very significant consequence of some New York construction accidents.  Damages for PTSD may be compensable in a New York or New Jersey construction injury lawsuit.  To learn more about your rights and potential recovery, please contact an experienced New Jersey and New York construction accident lawyer at 1-800-362-9329.
