Symptoms of Common Construction-Related Diseases

Construction diseases are a very real threat to construction workers, even decades after their work ends. Thus it is important for construction workers to be aware of the following diseases and their symptoms.

Asbestosis and Mesothelioma
Asbestos, a fiber often used in construction insulation, can lead to asbestosis or mesothelioma. Some common asbestosis and mesothelioma symptoms include:

• Shortness of breath
• Coughing
• Chest pain

Lead Poisoning
Steel workers, bridge workers, and others who work with lead-based products should be aware of the following symptoms of lead poisoning:

• Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting
• Fatigue and difficulty sleeping
• Headaches and muscle aches
• Neurological symptoms such as wrist or foot drops, unexplained tremors, convulsions, or seizures

Silicosis
Like exposure to other toxins such as asbestos and lead, the early stages of silicosis, the disease caused by silica exposure, are often unnoticed. As the disease progresses, a worker may notice:

• shortness of breath when exercising
• recurrent fevers
• signs of oxygen deprivation (for example, blue lips)
• chest pains.
