What to Do if You’re Hurt on a Cruise Ship

People dream of basking in the sun, indulging in decadent food, and enjoying world-class entertainment when they board a cruise ship. Nobody imagines that they will be the victim of a crime. But every year people become victims of violent and nonviolent crimes on cruise ships.

Recently, the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 was enacted to provide protection to victims of cruise-ship crimes and accidents. However, many of these provisions do not go into effect until early 2012.

Thus, it is important to understand what you can do to protect yourself, if you are hurt on a cruise ship.
First, report the incident immediately to a responsible crew member. Request that the incident be investigated, and ask whether there are any trained investigators on board. It is important to oversee the investigation and to do your own investigating as much as possible.

Second, report the incident to U.S. officials at the next port of call. If the incident took place outside the United States, then report it to the U.S. consulate.

Third, request that the incident be reported to the FBI and U.S. Coast Guard for further investigation.

Finally, contact an experienced New  Jersey and New York maritime injury lawyer as soon as possible so that your New York and New Jersey maritime accident lawyer can protect your rights and work hard for your recovery.
