A: According to occupational injury statistics and wage statistics, commercial fishermen have the deadliest jobs relative to their wages in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, commercial fishermen earn an average of $27,880 and suffer 116 deaths for every 100,000 commercial fishermen each year.
The high fatality rate and low income come as no surprise to New York Jones Act lawyers, to commercial fishermen, and to the families of commercial fishermen. However, that does not mean that the risks are acceptable.
Numerous reports indicate that there are affirmative steps that vessel owners and operators can take to help prevent commercial fishing accidents, injuries and fatalities. For example, owners and operators can train fishermen on how to use equipment and handle emergencies, make sure that appropriate safety gear is available, and make sure that the vessel is seaworthy before every voyage.
If you have been hurt, or if you have lost a loved one, in an East Coast commercial fishing accident, then please contact an experienced New York Jones Act Attorney today at 1-800-3-MAY-DAY or 1-800-362-9329 for more information.
