What are the Qualifications for a Construction Derrick and Crane Signal Person?

 

A: As of November 8, 2010, OSHA regulations require that a qualified signal person be working when crane or derrick work is being done and the point of operation is not in full view of the operator, the operator’s view is obstructed or the operator deems it necessary. 

When a signal person is required for crane or derrick work, that person must be qualified.  Specifically, the signal operator must have passed both an oral or written test and a practical test demonstrating his or her knowledge and competency using signals.  A person may be deemed qualified by a third party evaluator or by the construction employer’s qualified evaluator.
