What Can I Do as a Crew Member of a Commercial Fishing Boat to Protect a Fellow Commercial Fisherman from a Fatal Injury?

 

A: Commercial fishermen are in a unique position, often working and living together in harsh conditions. There is nobody else around to help, which makes you rely on one another. Thus, as a commercial fisherman it is important to understand what you can do to protect your fellow fishermen and to prevent commercial fishing fatalities.

As a New York Jones Act attorney, I recommend that you do the following things to try and avoid fatal commercial fishing accidents. First, act with reasonable care at all times. Understand the risks of your job and your duties on the boat so that you can act as safely as possible to prevent injuries. Next, know what to do if an accident occurs. Understand how and when to contact the Coast Guard for help, and learn what to tell the Coast Guard so that an injured or sick member of the crew can get appropriate help quickly.

There are some risks of commercial fishing that are inherent to the job, and there are others that crew members can minimize by understanding how to act safely at sea. If you act with reasonable care and now what to do in an emergency, then you may help save the life of one of your crewmembers.
