A: Often, there are several different investigations that occur when a commercial fisherman is injured. For example, the United States Coast Guard may conduct an investigation. On the East Coast of the United States, U.S. Coast Guard District 1 is responsible for investigating accidents that occur in the Northeast from Maine to New Jersey, U.S. Coast Guard District 5 is responsible for the mid-Atlantic states from Pennsylvania to North Carolina, and U.S. Coast Guard District 7 is responsible for the Southeastern states from South Carolina to Florida.
Additionally, it is possible that a maritime employer, local law enforcement agency, a state agency, and/or a New York maritime attorney may all conduct their own investigations. As an injured fisherman, it is particularly important that you hire a lawyer to conduct an investigation for you so that you can be sure that all of your legal rights are protected.
If you have been hurt, please call a New York maritime lawyer today at 1-800-362-9329 for more information.
