OSHA Issues Harsh Words and New Guidance About Construction Trench Accidents

Last month the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration released new guidance about construction trench safety, and with that guidance came a simple and direct message to construction employers.

OSHA's Message to Construction Employers

Dr. David Michaels, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health is quoted on the OSHA website as saying:
"No worker's life should end in a trench. Cave-ins during excavations
are some of the most common and grisliest causes of worker fatalities
in construction, yet they are entirely preventable. I am deeply troubled
by the continued violations of OSHA's trenching standards, many of
which bring tragic results..."

OSHA's Guidance on Construction Trench Safety

OSHA's new guidance on trench safety is designed to help prevent the tragic fatalities described by Dr. Michaels. It is meant to prevent serious injuries and to allow construction workers to prevent life changing accidents that ARE avoidable.

Specifically, the new guidance includes:

  • A Trenching and Excavation Fact Sheet that describes the hazards facing trench workers and safety measures required to protect workers from those hazards.
  • A Working Safely in Trenches Quickcard that uses graphics to describe trenching hazards and safety measures.
  • Do Not Enter an Unprotected Trench Poster that gives construction workers simple and easy to see safety steps that they can take to protect themselves every time they get in a trench.
These guidance materials do not provide new standards for construction employers or trench workers but do provide existing information in a new format that may help prevent future accidents.
