Many things can go wrong on a construction site. Some of these things, such as motor vehicle accidents and falls, are usually caused by negligence—and they are avoidable. Other things, such as explosions and severe sudden weather events, may not be avoidable. Either way, many construction sites are required by OSHA to maintain emergency action plans to protect construction workers from injuries.
Why Develop Emergency Action Plans for Construction Sites?
Quite simply, emergency action plans can prevent injuries and save lives if they are properly developed and followed. In order to develop an appropriate plan, your employer must conduct a hazard assessment to determine the likely causes of emergencies. Then your employer should develop a plan which, at a minimum, should contain provisions for reporting accidents to the appropriate authorities, evacuating the work-site, and confirming the evacuation of the work-site. There should also be procedures in place that can be followed by any critical employees who are left at the work-site to handle the emergency.
Your employer should have an alarm system and should provide training to all employees, explaining the contents of the emergency action plan so that it can properly and swiftly be implemented in the event of a construction-site emergency.
OSHA requires that emergency action plans be in writing, that they be kept at the workplace and that they be available for employees to review if the employer has more than ten employees. Thus, if you are unsure whether your employer has an emergency action plan to keep you safe in case of a construction accident, ask to see the plan.
What if My Employer Didn’t Have or Didn’t Follow an Emergency Action Plan?
