A New York FELA Lawyer Looks at FRA Proposed Passenger Train Safety Regulations

A New York or New Jersey passenger train accident can be terrifying for passengers and train workers. There is often confusion about what to do to ensure everyone’s safety. Yet, as a New York FELA lawyer, I know that the steps taken immediately after a train accident are incredibly important and can help protect passengers and workers from further harm.
Government Proposes New Passenger Train Safety Regulations
On January 3, 2012, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced proposed regulations to help passengers stay safe on trains when emergencies arise.
The proposed regulations would help:
  • Passengers locate and operate emergency train exits
  • First responders get on trains quickly to help passengers and crew
Specifically, the regulations recommend changes to vestibule doors, emergency lighting, signage and markings for emergency entrances and exits, rescue access, photo luminescent materials to highlight emergency exit path markings, instructions for emergency systems operations and requirements for debriefing after emergency situations and simulations. The public has until March 5, 2012 to respond to the proposed regulations.
