A Decade of East Coast Commercial Fishing Fatalities
August 2011 may not be the traditional time to do a New Year's type decade in review. However, the information contained in the federal Fatal Occupational Injuries in the U.S. Commercial Fishing Industry: Risk Factors and Recommendations East Coast Region report is too important not to share now.
East Coast Commercial Fishing Fatality Statistics
The report looks at fatal commercial fishing accidents off the United States East Coast between 2000 and 2009. In that decade:
165 commercial fishermen died.
2009 was the year with the most deaths. 29 East Coast commercial fishing fatalities occurred that year.
60% of the fatalities were caused by drowning after the crew had to abandon a ship in a vessel disaster.
22% of the fatalities were caused by falls overboard.
The fatalities occurred in 24 different fisheries, with 11 fisheries accounting for 84% of all deaths.
The scallop fishery had the highest number of fatalities during the decade with 44 of the 165 fatalities occurring in that fishery.
The multi-species ground fish fishery had the highest rate of death among commercial fishermen during the decade. Vessel instability and flooding accounted for many of the vessel disasters that claimed the lives of these commercial fishermen.
