1700 New York City Students Taught About Elevator Escalator Safety

Posted on Dec 13, 2011

Last month, the New York City Department of Buildings participated in National Elevator Escalator Safety Awareness Week. According to the Department of Buildings, New York City operates 62,000 elevators and escalators.
This year the Department of Buildings visited with approximately 1,700 children in first through third grades across the five boroughs of New York City to teach them what to do in an elevator or escalator emergency.
Ring, Relax and Wait
That is the slogan the City is urging children to remember if they have a problem on an elevator or escalator. Specifically, the City wants children to ring the emergency bell and wait for help. Additionally, children are being taught to:

  • Step carefully on and off escalators and elevators.
  • Ride forward facing and holding on to rails while on escalators.
  • Keep loose clothing away from escalator sides and elevator doors.
  • Make sure the elevator is flush with the floor before boarding.
  • Never pry open closed elevator doors.
This is the 8th annual National Elevator Escalator Safety Awareness Week organized by the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation. A malfunctioning elevator or escalator may be a premises liability issue. Our New York slip and fall lawyers extend our best wishes for a full and fast recovery to anyone hurt in a New York elevator or escalator accident this year.
