According to NBC New York, 2 Maritime Workers Hurt & 14 Boats Destroyed in New York Boat Yard Fire

Posted on Feb 19, 2012

Two maritime workers were injured and fourteen boats were destroyed in a New York marina fire earlier this month. On Wednesday, February 1, 2012, a boat exploded shortly before 4 p.m. at the boat yard located in the Village of Freeport, Long Island. The Mayor of Freeport reports that the fire was quite serious and that the flames reached as high as 40 feet as the fire burned through the boat yard.

Investigators report that the explosion occurred when two workers were removing a motor from a vessel in dry dock at the marina. The resulting fire spread quickly and required the services of approximately 200 firefighters from eight different fire departments for about two hours.

At the end of the two hours, the two workers who had been removing the motor were injured, fourteen boats were destroyed and six other vessels sustained damage. The workers were taken to the hospital with significant burns on their faces, arms and hands. Their names have not yet been released, but both maritime employees are expected to survive their work-related injuries, according to an NBC New York report.

The investigation into this serious New York maritime accident is continuing. There is no word yet on what caused the engine to explode that started this fire.

This Freeport boat yard is owned by Approved Marine. Approved Marine has not commented on the cause of the accident.

Our New York maritime accident lawyers express our best wishes for a full and fast recovery to the two workers injured in this boat yard fire.
