2011 New York City Construction Accident Statistics Announced

Posted on Feb 08, 2012

Last month, Mayor Bloomberg announced significant New York City construction accident statistics for 2011. The information is important to understand as the City strives to prevent future New York City construction injuries and fatalities.

2011 New York City Construction Accident Statistics

According to information announced by the Mayor, the following is true of New York City construction site accidents in 2011:

  • Construction activity rose 8 percent.
  • Construction accidents dropped 18 percent. There were 128 New York City construction accidents last year.
  • Construction accidents resulting in injuries dropped 7.8 percent. 152 people were injured in New York City construction accidents last year.
  • Five people died in New York City construction accidents, which is a slight increase over the four New York City construction-related deaths during 2010.
  • The New York City Buildings Department issued more than 5,100 stop work orders because of safety rule violations.

Why the Change in Accident Statistics?

Mayor Bloomberg attributes the decrease in New York City construction accidents and injuries to the construction-related safety rules that have been enacted since the fatal crane collapse that occurred in 2008. For example, new rules that prohibit smoking on New York City construction sites have decreased fires and resulting injuries. Similarly, new rules that require protection in work areas have prevented materials falling from heights and causing injuries.

Despite the decrease in accidents and injuries, the fact remains that 152 people were hurt and five people were killed in 2011 New York City construction accidents. Our New York construction accident lawyers extend our sincere condolences to the families of those who were killed and our best wishes for full and fast recoveries to those who were hurt.
