On June 25, 2010, sixty-one-year-old Richard Lang died while working at an MTA construction site. Mr. Lang was a truck driver for Preferred Transit, an MTA contractor. At about 8:20 on the morning of June 25, Mr. Lang was delivering metal subway panels to the Avenue M Station in Brooklyn.
He climbed on top of the panels to begin to unload them, but they became unsteady. Mr. Lang jumped off the panels, apparently realizing that was something was wrong, but he wasn’t fast enough to save his life. The 1,000-pound panels fell on him and crushed him to death.
Other construction workers who witnessed the accident claim that this fatal construction accident occurred because the panels were not properly secured. According to a New York City Transit spokesperson, the load shifted while Mr. Lang was untying the panels, which resulted in his death. The accident is being investigated.
This is the second fatal accident on this construction site since the beginning of the year. Back in January, forty-six-year-old Rosemary Pratt was killed in a forklift accident.
We extend our condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of Mr. Richard Lang following this horrific accident.
