Posted on Oct 24, 2011

Four teenagers were hit by New Jersey Transit trains within 24 hours of each other earlier this month. The first accident happened in Wayne, New Jersey on Sunday October 2, 2011. Three boys were hit on the tracks. Two of them died from their injuries, and the third was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. The two boys who died have been identified as 16-year-old Alan "AJ" Mendez and 17-year-old Nicholas Sabina.

On the following day, Monday October 3, 2011, a fourth boy was hit at the Plauderville train stop. He also died from his train accident injuries. That boy has been identified as 13-year-old Michael Cabaj. Michael was in seventh grade at Garfield Middle School and reportedly on his way home from cross country practice when the fatal accident occurred. It has been reported that Michael was on a scooter at the time of the crash.

NJ Transit reports that it will be meeting with the New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner to discuss additional safety features that can be put into place. Additionally, NJ Transit is implementing a program on train safety for students beginning in Kindergarten and continuing through high school.
We extend our sincerest condolences to the families of AJ Mendez, Nicholas Sabina and Michael Cabaj following their tragic New Jersey train accident deaths.
