Coast Guard Rescues Massachusetts Commercial Fisherman

Posted on Aug 09, 2011

On July 13, 2011, United States Coast Guard Sector Boston completed its eighth medical evaluation of the year. Shortly after 7 p.m. on July 13, Coast Guard Sector Boston received a request for assistance from the stern trawler Captain Mark. The Captain Mark is a 73 foot fishing vessel that is based in Boston. At the time of the call, Captain Mark was located 54 miles east of the Merrimack River placing it near Jeffreys Ledge, Massachusetts.

The Captain Mark requested assistance because a crew member had suffered a laceration on his arm. There is no word on what caused the laceration. A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Gloucester and an emergency medical technician responded to the fishing vessel's call for assistance. The Coast Guard workers from Station Gloucester and the EMT assessed the fisherman's injury and decided to transport him to the harbor so that he could get medical care at a hospital. They were reportedly concerned that the laceration and resulting blood loss were so significant that the fisherman was at risk of suffering an arm amputation.

The fisherman's medical condition and identity have not yet been released. We extend our best wishes to him for a full and complete recovery following this commercial fishing accident.
