Commercial Fisherman Suffers Head Injury Aboard the Sammy Jo

Posted on Jan 15, 2011

On January 5, 2011, a commercial fisherman was airlifted from his vessel approximately 70 miles off the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts.  The fisherman is a 55-year-old crew member aboard the fishing vessel the Sammy Jo.  His name has not yet been released to the media.

Officials report that Coast Guard Sector Boston received the call for help around 2 p.m. and that the man was airlifted from the Sammy Jo at approximately 2:45 p.m. by members of the Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod.

Crew members report that the man had sustained a head injury on January 3, 2011, and that two days later he began experiencing swelling.  The crew from the Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod evaluated the man, consulted with the flight surgeon, and determined that the injured crew member needed further medical treatment.  He was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital.  There has been no update on his medical condition.

We wish the injured Sammy Jo crew member a fast and complete recovery following this commercial fishing accident.
