Five Injured in New Jersey Train Fire

Posted on May 01, 2011

Five people were injured and taken to a New Jersey hospital after a train fire occurred on Saturday, April 16, 2011. The fire broke out near the Camden City Hall Station in Camden, New Jersey around 2:15 a.m. According to reports of the incident, the fire started on an eastbound Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO) train as it was pulling into City Hall Station. The PATCO Hi-Speedline train was headed east to Lindenwold.

There were 33 passengers and a train operator aboard the train at the time of the fire. Four passengers and the train operator were taken to area hospitals, including Cooper University Hospital, for treatment of smoke inhalation. Passengers report chaos and fear after smoke started to fill the rail cars.

Camden's City Hall Station was closed for at least a day as officials investigated the cause of the accident. It appears that the fire was started by a mechanical malfunction that sent smoke into the cars of the train, though the official cause of the fire remains under investigation. Extensive damage is reported to the tracks in the area.

We extend our best wishes for a full and quick recovery to everyone injured in this New Jersey train accident.
