At about 2:30 on the afternoon of June 30, 2010, four-year-old Aurora Horn was getting on an elevator at 435 East 85th Street. As the girl was trying to get on the elevator on the second floor of the five story building, she fell into the gap between the elevator and the landing. She fell twenty-five feet to the basement of the building.
Aurora’s mother and building workers found the girl in the basement. They carried her up from the basement where they met emergency workers who transported the injured girl to New York Presbyterian Hospital. The girl’s injuries were not believed to be life threatening, and officials were surprised at how lucky she was not to incur more serious injuries.
The Upper East-Side building where the accident occurred is listed as a film production company. The Building Department has declared the building unsafe, and it is now closed.
We extend our best wishes for a full and speedy recovery to Aurora Horn and to her mother, who witnessed her young child’s frightening accident.
