Freight Boat and Lobster Boat Collide Off Massachusetts Coast...
Posted on 1/24/2012
A freight boat and a lobster boat collided off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard last month. According to the Steamship Authority, the Katama, a freight boat, stopped and started to go astern when it was hit by Mirage, a 36 foot commercial lobster boat. The accident happened around 3:45 p.m. on December 21, 2011, approximately 1.5 miles north of Martha’s Vineyard.
At the time of the crash, the Katama was on its way to Woods Hole. The crew of the Katama reports seeing a lobster boat approaching at a high speed. The lobster boat was approaching on the Katama’s starboard side. The Katama reportedly slowed down and eventually stopped to try and let the lobster boat pass in front of it. The Katama also is reported to have sounded its distress signal; however, the lobster boat still collided with the Katama.
There was not significant damage done to the Katama, and there were no injuries reported in this maritime accident off the coast of Massachusetts. The lobster boat reported minor damage and both vessels were able to safely moor in Vineyard Haven Harbor.
The crew of the Katama was tested for drugs and alcohol, as is standard in this type of situation, and all tests came back negative. The cause of this New England maritime accident remains under investigation by the United States Coast Guard.
