Lobsterman Lost at Sea

Posted on Jan 10, 2011

On Sunday, December 12, 2010 a 38-year-old Maine fisherman named David W. Mahonen II was lost at sea.  Mr. Mohanen fell overboard approximately 45 miles south of Rockland, Maine.  He had been working on the 77-foot commercial fishing vessel the Timothy Michael.

Reports indicate that Mr. Mohanen became tangled in the lobster line and was pulled overboard into the cold Northern Atlantic waters.

The Coast Guard was notified of this maritime accident at approximately 12:20 p.m. and dispatched a helicopter, a jet and a Coast Guard cutter to help with the search.  The seas at the time of the accident were approximately 10 -15 feet high and the winds were gusting to more than 45 knots.  Additionally, rescue crews battled fog and rain.

Mr. Mohanen was reported to be a lifelong lobster fisherman who learned the trade as a young boy and began his career after graduating from high school in 1990.

David Mahonen was survived by a son, a daughter, his parents, and many loved ones.  We extend our sincere condolences to Mr. Mahonen’s family and friends after this tragic commercial fishing accident.
