The U.S. Department of Labor ranks commercial fishing as the most dangerous occupation in America. New rules are being implemented by the Coast Guard to reduce fishing boat injuries and fatalities. The bill makes safety training mandatory for vessel operators including a refresher course every five years, funded by 3 million annually for training. The bill proposes stricter safety requirements for vessels 50-79 feet in lenght. New vessels 50 feet or larger, or those being retrofitted, would have to be constructed according to prescribed standard, such as those outlined by the American Bureau of Shipping or ABS. Any vessel larger than 79 feet would neec a "load line" showing how low the boat can go in the water before becoming unsafe. This will help prevent over loading, a major course of vessel sinkings. To learn more, read the article link. Hofmann and Schweitzer have been for many years active lobbyists for improved safety requirements in the commercial fishing industry.
