New York City Aims to Stop Elderly Falls

Posted on Oct 20, 2011

New York City is trying to lower the number of elderly people who are hurt in New York fall accidents each year. According to recent information released by the New York City Department of Aging, 300 elderly New Yorkers die every year from fall injuries. Additionally, approximately 24,000 elderly New Yorkers end up in the emergency room because of fall injuries every year. That means that, on average, more than 66 elderly people in New York are seeking emergency room care or dying from fall injuries every single day of the year.

In an effort to eliminate the pain of the injured and the grief of those who survive the fall, the City is attempting different measures to lower the number of elderly falls. Fitness classes, for example, will be offered at New York City senior centers so that senior citizens can work on keeping their balance to avoid serious falls and resulting injuries.

The City is also recommending that the elderly visit their doctors to review medications and have their eyesight checked. Families and caretakers can help by removing trip and fall hazards such as poor lighting, clutter and unsecured rugs at home. Together the City hopes that fewer fall tragedies will strike in 2011 and beyond.
