New York Railroad Construction Worker Dies in Tunnel Below Park Ave

Posted on Dec 18, 2011

During the evening of Thursday November 17, 2011, 26-year-old Michael O’Brien was working on a commuter rail tunnel below Park Avenue in New York City when a piece of concrete fell on him and took his life. His death is being called the first death of a Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) construction worker in recent memory.

The local transportation and federal safety officials continue to investigate the cause of Mr. O’Brien’s death. However, preliminary reports indicate that the concrete had been sprayed onto the ceiling with a pressure hose shortly before the fatal construction accident.

The contractor which employed Mr. O’Brien has been identified as Dragados. It has been reported that the company has flown Mr. O’Brien’s body back to his family in Wisconsin for burial and is paying for Mr. O’Brien’s funeral expenses and for the grief counseling of his surviving coworkers.

Mr. O’Brien had worked on the job for approximately three weeks before his death. His father, another MTA construction worker, was with him in the underground tunnel when he died. Mr. O’Brien is survived by his parents, siblings, relatives and friends. Our New York railroad construction accident lawyers express our sincere condolences to all of them following this tragic loss.
