NTSB Forum to Address “Unacceptably High Injury and Fatality Rate” in

Posted on Aug 31, 2010

Earlier this month, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced that it will be holding an October forum to discuss the “unacceptably high injury and fatality rate” in the commercial fishing industry.  The goals of the forum are to identify the safety issues of concern to the industry and to the government, and  identify strategies to reduce injuries and fatalities.

Forum participants are expected to include people from the commercial fishing industry in Alaska, the Gulf Coast, the West Coast, the East Coast, federal agencies, safety equipment manufacturers, and people from marine safety training centers.

While the agenda has not yet been released topics are expected to include vessel standards, human performance, federal regulation of the commercial fishing industry, and the perspective of fishermen regarding safety.

The forum will be held on October 13 – 14, 2010 at the NTSB ‘s Board Room and Conference Center in Washington D.C.  The public is invited to attend the forum live or to watch the live webcast on the NTSB website.

The NTSB website has information about the topics that will be covered at this important forum on commercial fishing safety and information about how you can be involved before and during the forum.
