Serious Injuries Sustained by Construction Worker on Throgs Neck Bridge

On Friday, May 28, 2010, the start of the Memorial Day Weekend, a construction worker was hurt in a work-related accident on the Throgs Neck Bridge in New York.

Forty-five-year old Louis Mendoza was working as a subcontractor on the Throgs Neck that morning, installing fencing on the pedestal of the span's Queens tower shortly after 11 a.m., when he slipped and fell off the ladder on which he was working onto the hard concrete surface twenty feet below. The impact was lessened by a safety rope, which slowed his fall. The safety rope may have saved his life, but it did not prevent him from incurring serious injuries.

Firefighters quickly got Mr. Mendoza to a boat, which transported him to Fort Totten where he was taken by ambulance to North Shore University Hospital.

Reports indicate that Mr. Mendoza suffered a fractured arm and a head injury from his fall. He is expected to survive, though the extent of his head injury is currently unknown.

This was an unfortunate event, and we extend our sympathy and best wishes for a speedy recovery to Louis Mendoza.
