Soho Subway Accident Causes Injuries

Posted on Jun 27, 2010

Just after midnight on Thursday, June 17, 2010, a man was attempting to board the D train at Grand Street Station in Lower Manhattan when he stepped into the gap between the train and the subway platform.

His leg became trapped in that space and the subway train moved a short distance before the operator realized that a person was caught. With that short movement the man’s leg was twisted and badly injured. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment. Horrified onlookers witnessed the gruesome accident, and at least one captured the whole thing on video with his cell phone.

This type of accident has been anticipated by the Metropolitan Transit Authority. Reports indicate that the MTA knows of several stations where the gap between the subway train and the platform is wider than allowed by federal regulations. The MTA has tried to mitigate the danger by posting “Mind the Gap” signs, but this is clearly an insufficient precaution.

We extend our best wishes for a quick and full recovery to the man hurt in the June 17 SoHo subway accident.
