U.S. House Votes to Amend the Death on the High Seas Act

Posted on Jul 19, 2010

On July 1, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to amend the Death on the Seas Act. Currently, the Death on the High Seas Act provides compensation for lost income and funeral expenses, but it provides no recovery for the emotional suffering of the family.

After the surviving relatives of those killed in the BP Deepwater Horizon tragedy effectively presented their case to the U.S. House of Representatives, the House decided that the century-old Death on the High Seas Act was outdated and needed to be amended to address these fundamental losses suffered by surviving family members.

The bill passed by the House allows families to recover for the pain and suffering and loss of compassion, care, and comfort caused by the death of their loved one on the high seas.

Before the House bill can take effect, however, it must  pass the Senate and be signed by the President. Many believe that there will be strong opposition to this bill in the Senate, where officials from the oil and cruise industries are expected to heavily lobby senators to vote against the bill.

We extend our condolences to the families of those killed in BP Deepwater Horizon tragedy, and we will continue to monitor important legal developments related to the Death on the High Seas Act.
