What Caused the Fire That Killed Six New York Children?

Posted on Sep 02, 2010

On August 25, 2010, officials released the cause of the fire that killed six children in Fort Edward, New York.  The fire occurred on Saturday morning, June 26, 2010, at a two story house on Burgoyne Avenue in Fort Edward.  About 50 firefighters responded to the blaze.

Five people were able to escape the fire safely, but six children, ages one through 12, died from smoke inhalation related to the fire.  The children who died were identified as 12-year-old Hope Palazzo-Smith, six-year-old Mackenzie Palazzo-Smith, eight-year-old Paige Cox, seven-year-old Lewis Carl Smith, three-year-old Emilee Smith, and one-year-old Abigail Smith.

Now, two months after the accident, investigators determined the fire that started in the living room of the home was due to faulty wiring.  Specifically, an incorrect fuse was installed in the house that led a wire to overheat and ignite the fire.

The parents are reported to be considering lawsuits against the property owner and the property management company.

The New Jersey and New York fire injury lawyers of Hofmann & Schweitzer extend our sincere condolences to the parents and loved ones of the six children killed in this New York fire.
