How Do Construction Injuries Happen?

Last month the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released the 2009 construction fatality statistics.  According to the BLS, 54 percent of construction fatalities occurred because of falls, highway accidents, and being struck by objects. While the number of construction workers injured in 2009  was not included in the BLS numbers, it is reasonable to think that many more construction workers were injured in falls, highway accidents and struck by object accidents during 2009.  Yet, the BLS numbers only tell half the story.

What Happened to the Other Construction Workers Who Were Hurt or Killed in 2009?

A review of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation Program indicates other reasons have lead to construction worker fatalities in the past. It is reasonable to assume that the cause of these past fatalities led to injuries and deaths during 2009.*  Some of those causes include:
  • Electrocutions
  • Getting caught in machinery
  • Explosions/fires
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Asphyxiation
  • Heat stroke
  • Trench collapse
