Bronx Woman Dies in New York Subway Accident

Posted on Jun 16, 2011

On Wednesday, June 1, 2011, a woman allegedly fainted at a subway station on the Upper East Side and fell onto the train tracks. This New York subway accident occurred at the East 77th Street and Lexington Avenue Station shortly after 3 p.m. A northbound Number 5 subway train hit the woman, and she was killed at the accident scene.

The woman has been identified as 21-year-old Fatoumata Diallo, of the Bronx. Ms. Diallo was a student at Borough of Manhattan Community College. It is unclear what caused her to faint. Her family has reported that she has fainted before, but that it was not a recurring problem. The train platform was hot and humid at the time of this tragic accident, though it is currently unknown whether the conditions were responsible for Ms. Diallo's fainting.

Several subway commuters witnessed the accident and at least one subway passenger had to be taken to nearby Lenox Hill Hospital for emotional trauma treatment. Subway service was shut down for a period of time while officials investigated the accident.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Fatoumata Diallo after this tragic New York train accident.
