Coast Guard Helps Prepare for a Safe Dungeness Crab Season

Posted on Dec 02, 2010

On December 1, 2010, the Oregon and Washington State Dungeness Crab Fishery will open for the season.  Crab fishing is one of the most dangerous occupations in the United States, partly because of the extremely hazardous conditions in which the fishermen work. Accordingly, the Coast Guard took steps to protect workers before the season officially opened.

On November 15-19 and November 22 – 24, the Coast Guard conducted Operation Safe Crab.  Coast Guard officials held vessel safety spot checks while the vessels were in dock.  Some of the things that officials were doing included checking for these:

  • Primary lifesaving equipment such as survival suits and life rafts.
  • Pot loading practices.
  • Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs).  Previous checks have found that between 25 to 33 percent of EPIRBs are installed incorrectly.

If the Coast Guard found extremely serious problems, the vessel may have been restricted from operating until the problems were fixed. In addition to safety checks, Coast Guard officials conducted voluntary safety training to help commercial crabbers stay safe this season.

The safety checks and training were completed by the Thirteenth Coast Guard District. We extend our best wishes for a safe and successful Dungeness Crab Season to all those who work in the industry.
