Driver Dies in New Jersey Train Car Crash

Posted on Apr 01, 2011

A motorist was killed on the train tracks in Haddon Heights, New Jersey on Friday, March 18, 2011. The accident happened shortly before 3 a.m. when a freight train, owned and operated by Norfolk Southern, hit the vehicle's driver's side door while the vehicle was crossing the tracks on Station Avenue near the Atlantic Avenue intersection.

The motorist who has been identified as 37-year-old Christopher Benner of Haddon Heights was reportedly trapped in his car, and he was declared dead at the scene of this New Jersey train accident.

According to the Haddon Heights Police Chief, it appears that Mr. Benner was traveling at the 25 mph speed limit and that he did not hear the warning horn sounded by the train operator. There is no gate stopping traffic at the Station Avenue railroad crossing. The speed limit for trains passing in this area is 12 mph.

The intersection of Station and Atlantic Avenues remained closed through the Friday morning rush hour as officials investigated the cause of this fatal New Jersey train crash.

Mr. Benner is survived by his parents and daughter. We extend our condolences to his family, friends and coworkers during this difficult time.
