Longshoreman Dies in Philadelphia Terminal Workplace Accident

Posted on Sep 01, 2011

An unexpected tragedy took the life of a longshoreman at the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal on Friday, August 12, 2011. 54-year-old Charles DiRago was killed in an alleged accident shortly after a container ship docked and began unloading at the terminal. Mr. DiRago was a foreman at the terminal and had worked at the waterfront for about 36 years. He is described as a dedicated longshoreman, as was his father before him.

Representatives of the marine terminal have not commented on the longshoreman's death other than to label him as a "superstar" and to say that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating this fatal maritime accident.

A colleague of Mr. DiRago's has said that Mr. DiRago died when the tractor part of a tractor trailer backed into him and crushed him to death.

A memorial service was held at Packer Avenue Marine Terminal on August 13 and was attended by approximately 120 workers. Mr. DiRago was described as a team player who was great with people and a longshoreman who will be greatly missed.

We express our sincere condolences to Mr. DiRago's four children, his relatives, friends and coworkers following this tragic and fatal Pennsylvania longshoreman accident.
