Metro North Train Derails After Leaving New York City’s Grand Central Station

Posted on Aug 16, 2011

A Metro North train derailment in midtown Manhattan last month was both uncomfortable and potentially dangerous for passengers. The six car train on the Hudson Line was carrying hundreds of passengers during the evening rush hour on Monday, July 11, 2011.

The train departed Grand Central Station at 6 p.m. and was due to arrive at Croton-Harmon at 6:57 p.m. However, shortly after the train left Grand Central terminal one of the wheels on the second car went off the track near 59th Street and Park Avenue.

Passengers report that the air conditioning was not working on the rail cars and that the heat was suffocating. One passenger reports that another passenger passed out during the wait to be evacuated. However, the media reports indicated that there were no injuries associated with this New York train derailment.

The New York Fire Department and the New York Police Department helped evacuate passengers. Some passengers reportedly had to wait more than an hour to be put on other trains or to get to street level via emergency exits.
There is no word yet on what caused the derailment. Four pregnant women were reportedly taken to area hospitals for evaluation after this New York City train accident.
