New Jersey Commercial Fishing Vessel Voyage Terminated Twice in One Month

Posted on Dec 21, 2011

The commercial fishing vessel Jaime Mae had its voyage terminated twice last month by the United States Coast Guard.

Vessel Safety Violations Found on November 3, 2011

The first termination occurred on Thursday, November 3, 2011 approximately 32 miles south of Sandy Hook, New Jersey. The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sailfish, from Sandy Hook, New Jersey, found multiple violations including:

  • Only 3 working fire extinguishers.
  • An expired electronic position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB).
  • Corrosion that lead to water leaking in through the shaft seal, deck and hull.

The Jaime Mae returned to port, allegedly fixed the safety violations and set forth on another voyage.

Further Vessel Safety Violations Found on November 22, 2011

The second termination occurred within three weeks of the previous termination. On Tuesday, November 22, 2011, the Coast Guard Cutter Tybee, from Woods Hole, Massachusetts, inspected the Jaime Mae approximately 13 miles east of Long Branch, New Jersey and found inadequate safety gear aboard the vessel. The boat was escorted back to port because the reported violations of federal commercial fishing safety laws could not be immediately corrected.

The Jaime Mae is a 78 foot commercial fishing boat with a homeport of Point Pleasant, New Jersey.
