New York Crane Accident Claims Life of Crane Operator

A crane operator died in a tragic construction accident on Tuesday, August 30, 2011. Douglas Fitzmaurice was operating a crane in the Genesee Valley Gorge when the accident occurred. Mr. Fitzmaurice worked for a Michigan construction company that was working on the hydroelectric facility at the Gorge for Rochester Gas and Electric.

According to accident reports, the crane that Mr. Fitzmaurice was operating tipped over on a concrete spillway. Mr. Fitzmaurice was trapped underneath the 35 ton crane at around 2:45 p.m. He was conscious when rescue workers got to him. An estimated 50 firefighters and other first responders worked for hours to save Mr. Fitzmaurice's life.

Rescuers had to try to free Mr. Fitzmaurice while preventing the crane from going over the edge, whilst using cables and ropes to try to save his life.

After several hours, Mr. Fitzmaurice died as rescuers continued to remove the large crane from him. OSHA and the New York State Department of Labor will likely investigate the accident to determine what happened. First responders believe that the pressure built up in Mr. Fitzmaurice's body may have contributed to or caused his death when the crane was moved.
