NJ Transit Worker Killed by Locomotive on Memorial Day

Posted on Jun 04, 2010

A NJ Transit worker was hit by a locomotive and killed on the night of Monday May 31, 2010. Sixty-three-year-old Greg Kastner was working in the maintenance yard in Kearny when he was struck by a locomotive.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the locomotive’s braking system was not properly engaged at the time of the accident.

Mr. Kastner had been employed by NJ Transit for seven years. His job was to help shuttle engines in the Meadows Maintenance Facility yard. He had just finished refueling an engine when he was hit. NJ Transit police and emergency workers tried to revive him, but they were unsuccessful, and he was declared dead at the scene.

NJ Transit and the Federal Rail Administration are continuing their investigation of this tragic accident. They have promised a thorough investigation so that the cause of this untimely death can be determined and future workers do not suffer similar fates. In the meantime, a NJ Transit official says that agency employees have been reminded of proper safety procedures and that grief counselors are available.

This was an unfortunate event, and we offer our condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Mr. Kastner during this difficult time.
