Posted on Nov 13, 2011

A commercial fishing boat caught fire about 20 nautical miles southeast of Gloucester, Massachusetts on Sunday, October 23, 2011. The 50 foot vessel known as Elizabeth Ann with a home port of Portsmouth, New Hampshire reportedly had smoke coming from the engine room while out at sea.

The fire extinguishers onboard the Elizabeth Ann were reportedly in the wheelhouse above the engine room. Elizabeth Ann crewmembers issued a mayday call around 9 a.m. Two off duty Coast Guardsmen were fishing for blue fin tuna approximately one half mile from the Elizabeth Ann and heard the mayday call. They were able to respond in time to provide two fire extinguishers to the crew of the Elizabeth Ann. The crew was then able to put out the fire. On duty Coast Guardsmen reportedly got to the scene shortly after and provided additional fire extinguishers to the crew.

Approximately one hour after the mayday call the fire was out onboard the Elizabeth Ann and the Coast Guard was able to tow the vessel back to Gloucester. The identities of the Elizabeth Ann crewmembers have not yet been released to the media. However, no injuries were reported after this East Coast commercial fishing accident.
