Two New York Construction Workers Caught in Flooding Staten Island Elevator

Posted on Sep 07, 2011

Heavy rain overspread the New York City area on Sunday August 14, 2011, and put two New York construction workers in serious danger. Around 9:30 a.m. on August 14, Ed Tyler and Wendell Amaker were working on a senior center that is being built on Staten Island when they were involved in a New York construction accident.

The two men were using the elevator to move supplies down to the basement, but what they didn't know was that the basement was filling up with water. It has been reported that once Tyler and Amaker entered the elevator, the doors would not open despite the elevator buttons they pressed. The two men report hearing the swishing of the water as the elevator went down into the basement, and the elevator then began to fill with water.

The men claim that the water was about chest high. To avoid possible electrocution they both sat on a rubber utility cart that was in the elevator with them. After almost an hour in the flooding elevator, one of their cell phones caught a signal and the construction workers were able to call 911. Firefighters quickly came to the scene, shut off the electricity and got the men out of the elevator and to safety following this New York construction accident.
