In the past few weeks, there have been several reports of NJ mass transit drivers doing things other than driving behind the wheel. The latest report was based on evidence captured by a NJ Transit Newark Light Rail rider. The rider took out his cell phone and shot video of the train operator touching the keypad of a phone and looking down at it while the train was moving on the tracks. It allegedly shows that the driver was texting while operating the train.
The rider who shot the video says it is not the first time he has seen a train operator use a cell phone while driving or otherwise engage in distracted driving activities.
NJ Transit Responds to the Video
NJ Transit has confirmed that the video shows one of its operators violating both NJ Transit’s Policy and the law. According to New Jersey Transit, the operator was immediately suspended without pay.
What You Can Do to Protect Yourself and Others
Using a cell phone while driving a train, or other vehicle, is dangerous. NJ Transit is encouraging passengers to take videos and to report distracted driving incidents so that appropriate actions can be taken and so that you, and others, can ride mass transit safely.
