Will New Program Improve Railroad Safety?

Posted on Oct 07, 2010

Amtrak has recently agreed to participate in a Federal Railroad Association (FRA) pilot program designed to help improve safety on railroads throughout the country including New York and New Jersey.  Railroad employees participating in this pilot program are being encouraged to anonymously report near accidents. Specifically, railroad workers are being encouraged to confidentially report close calls that could have resulted in a railroad accident or in an injury, but did not.  The confidentiality part of the program is important so that workers do not fear discipline or retaliation for sharing this type of information.

After training is complete, the pilot program will include workers in the Northeast, the Midwest and the West Coast.  The “near accidents” will be reported to NASA which has contracted with the FRA to process the reports.  After the reports are processed, a peer review team will determine whether any action is necessary to correct what caused the “near accident” so that future railroad accidents and injuries are avoided.

So far, the railroads participating in this pilot program include Amtrak, Canadian Pacific Railway, Union Pacific Railroad and New Jersey Transit.

New Jersey Transit and Amtrak employees wishing to learn more about this program should talk to their superiors or contact the FRA for more information.
