Woman Critically Injured in Elevator Accident on Christmas Day

Posted on Jan 06, 2011

On Christmas Day 2010, a woman was hurt in a Brooklyn Hospital elevator accident.  The accident occurred shortly before 4:45 p.m. on December 25.  The victim’s identity has not been released but officials have said that she is 47-years-old and that she was in critical condition after this premises liability accident.

According to reports, the woman was visiting a patient at SUNY Downstate Medical Center Saturday afternoon when her leg became trapped in the hospital’s elevator shaft.  The victim’s leg was caught above the knee between the floor and the elevator on the eighth floor of the building.

She remained trapped for approximately 15 minutes before she was freed.  Firefighters had to use an airbag and jaws of life to free her and said that she sustained a major trauma and significant loss of blood.  After she was freed from the elevator, she was quickly transported to Kings County Hospital Center for emergency surgery.

Officials report that this New York elevator accident happened because of an elevator malfunction. We extend our best wishes to the accident victim for a quick and complete recovery following this New York City premises liability accident.
