NEW SKYSCRAPER NEAR EMPIRE STATE BUILDING IS APPROVED

Over objection from the owners of The Empire State Building, developers have succeeded in gaining New York City Council approval of zoning and land use changes to permit the building of a new 67-story tower two blocks west of the 102-story Empire State landmark. The tower will be slightly shorter than the iconic building, but lawmakers rejected the argument that the Empire State Building was so special in its area that the 1,190-foot glass office tower would ruin the view and forever negatively alter the skyline. Developer of the project, Anthony Malkin, advised that the development is still in the planning stages and no date for construction has been set. The project would involve the demolition of the aging Pennsylvania Hotel across the street from Penn Station.
