What to Do After a Tanker Accident

The Jones Act may allow you to recover damages if you’ve been hurt in a tanker accident, but you may have to fight for those damages.  Your employer may not be willing to simply provide you with the damages to which you are entitled.  As a New Jersey and New York Jones Act attorney, I suggest that you take the following steps to protect your potential recovery after an accident.

First, get the medical help that you need.  This includes both emergency care immediately after the accident and follow up care with the doctor of your choice.  The Jones Act does not require that you see a company doctor following a tanker accident in order to recover damages.

Second, document everything that you can.  Write down everything that happened during the accident, including the names of crewmembers that may have witnessed your injury.  Take pictures if you are physically able to do so.  Keep track of all of the details of your accident so that you can share them with your maritime injury lawyer.

Finally, contact a New York and New Jersey Jones Act attorney.  The New Jersey and New York accident lawyers of Hofmann & Schweitzer will zealously represent you and fight hard for your full and just recovery.  Contact us today at 1-800-3-MAY-DAY or via our online contact form for more information.
