2010 New York City Construction Accident Statistics Released by Department of Buildings

Posted on Mar 21, 2011

In January 2010, the New York City Department of Buildings announced a 28% drop in New York City construction accidents during 2010. Since then, at least three New York City construction workers have been killed leading some people to wonder whether the trend will continue in 2011.

According to the Department of Buildings, there were 157 construction-related accidents in 2010 compared to 218 construction accidents in 2009.  Fatal construction accidents were down 78% in 2010 with only four of the 157 accidents resulting in fatalities.    Injuries were down 31% with 165 reported injuries in 2010 compared to 241 injuries in 2009.

The Department of Buildings attributes the decline in construction injuries and fatalities to increased regulation, a heightened awareness of safety, and a 7% decline in application for new construction permits.

There is some concern that 2011 may not be as safe a year for construction workers, as three fatalities have already been reported in New York City.  One New York City construction worker died in Queens in January 2011 and two workers lost their lives in Manhattan in February 2011.

To those who lost loved ones in New York City construction accidents during 2010 and 2011, we extend our deepest condolences.  To those still recovering from injuries, we extend our best wishes for a quick and complete recovery.
